Bylaws of the Ancient Path Coven
The following bylaws are established for the purpose of providing a secure foundation for the daily running of and perpetuation of the Ancient Path Coven (hereafter referred to as “APC” or “the Coven”).
Article I – Establishment and Purpose
Ancient Path is hereby established as a coven of the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) religion, dedicated to the worship of the old PIE gods, meeting to worship at times appointed by the natural movement of the seasons and astrological signs, and guided by the Coven’s Council of Elders in accordance with these bylaws.
APC has been established for the following purposes:
I.To facilitate the practice of the PIE religion in the form and manner considered most suitable by the Coven’s Council of Elders.
II.To provide a safe and supportive environment for free religious expression by followers of the Proto-Indo-European path.
III.To identify, develop, and train caring and competent clergy and ritual leaders to serve the Pagan community.
Article II – Organization and Structure of the Coven
In accordance with these Bylaws, APC shall be structured and organized as follows: the Coven shall consist of one High Priest or High Priestess, two Priest/esses, and any number of Disciples, or Disciples so long as total membership does not exceed 13 members. The offices of Arch Priest (AP), Arch Priestess (APS), High Priest (HP) and High Priestess (HPS), Priest (PR), Priestess (PRS), Council of Elders (CoE), Witch, and Disciple are discussed below.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Ancient Path Coven is to honor the gods and goddesses of the Proto-Indo-European people, and to celebrate the seasons in accordance with the old ways.
Structure
APC is a single coven with the ability to have multiple off-shoots. Once the coven reaches 13 members with Disciples that would bring the coven over its 13 member limit, a PR or PRS, at the discretion of the AP, APS, HP, or HPS, may form their own coven which will be considered an off-shoot of the original. The original coven shall be called the “Elder Coven” and each off-shoot shall be called a “Younger Coven” and given a unique designation. Each Younger Coven shall follow the bylaws and structures of the Elder Coven.
The PR or PRS that formed the Younger Coven will be elevated to the rank of HP or HPS of their respective Younger Coven. Once the coven has grown to the point where a second Younger Coven forms from the original, the HP or HPS of the Elder Coven will be given the rank of AP or APS.
Membership Structure
All members must be a legal adult (typically this means being 18 years of age), unless their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) are also members and they are in the company of their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) at each event they attend. Membership in APC shall consist of five ranks with limited accessibility to each rank. The details for each rank are as follows:
As a matter of courtesy, members of pagan traditions, groups, or covens other than APC and whose initiations have been accepted as equivalent to an APC initiation may be permitted, at the sole discretion of CoE to attend closed APC meetings.
Article III - Behavior of Members
I.All members of the Coven shall conduct themselves in the highest degree of integrity and trust.
II.All members of Ancient Path are expected to conduct themselves in a manner in keeping with these Bylaws and the traditions of the Pagan community.
III.Furthermore, we hold that every individual has the right to be secure and respected in his or her own person: in body, in mind, and in spirit. Therefore, Ancient Path Coven will not tolerate the following on the part of any member:
a.The use of Baneful Magick. This shall include both the current practice and the teaching of baneful magick whether alone or in conjunction with another member of APC or with any other person. Members are expected to disclose any past practice or teaching of baneful magick to any Coven rank of Priest / Priestess or above and may do so without fear of reprisal.
b.The use or possession of illegal drugs at or in connection with APC rituals or activities.
c.Forcing or coercing another individual to participate in sexual activity against his or her will, or to consume mind-altering substances against his or her will; or requiring complete or partial nudity of any individual against his or her will; or obtaining consent to any of these by deception or misrepresentation, or under color of authority, regardless of the circumstances under which these actions take place.
d.Any deliberate action directed toward another individual that is calculated to cause injury, harm or pain; be it physical, mental or emotional, where it is clear that the member in doing so has acted inappropriately, out of proportion to the circumstances, or in abuse of his or her discretion.
e.Any member of Ancient Path who violates the standards outlined above shall be subject to disciplinary action as set forth in Article VI.
f.If any law is broken at any time the appropriate authorities will be contacted.
Article IV - Disciple
A Disciple of Ancient Path shall be defined as any person who is actively studying for initiation within the Coven under the mentorship of a member of the Coven, as approved by the Council of Elders. The following rules apply to all who seek membership in the Coven:
I. All Disciples of Ancient Path must be a legal adult (typically this means being 18 years of age).
II.The procedure for becoming a Disciple is as follows:
a.An individual shall make her or his intention to study for initiation clearly known to a member of the Coven.
b.The Coven member and individual shall bring notice to the Council of Elders, who may then accept this individual as a Disciple.
c.Upon acceptance the Disciple shall be assigned a Teacher from within the members of the Coven, who shall then supervise the Disciple's training toward initiation.
i.This Teacher shall not be a person with whom the Disciple is romantically involved.
ii.A review of the Bylaws the Coven, and the traditions of the Pagan community, shall be covered during the first formal lesson.
iii.An individual who does not live close enough to the Coven to make face-to-face instruction practical may be taught by correspondence.
d.For a Disciple to be initiated in APC, he or she must complete the curriculum prescribed by the Council of Elders and must fulfill the following requirements:
i.The Disciple’s name must be brought by his or her Teacher before the Council of Elders, and receive, by a two-thirds majority, the Council's approval for initiation.
ii.Disciples who have been initiated in another tradition may seek to have that initiation accepted by APC as being equivalent to an APC initiation.
Article V - Members
Within Ancient Path, a member shall be defined as anyone who has received initiation during a ritual conducted by a AP, APS, HP, or HPS of APC or an individual who has requested membership and whose initiation in another tradition has been accepted as being equivalent to an APC initiation by the CoE and whose request has been approved by the CoE.
I.Members of the Coven shall be responsible for conducting the business of the Coven, under the supervision of the AP, APS, HP, or HPS, as follows:
a.Members are encouraged to attend meetings of the CoE to sit in an advisory role.
b.Members shall teach the methods, traditions, and customs of APC to their Disciples within the Coven.
c.Members who do not attend at least four events per year will be expelled from the Coven.
Article VI - Grievances & Disciplinary Actions
Grievances of Individuals
Any member of Ancient Path who has a grievance which cannot be either set aside or resolved in accordance with the traditions of the Pagan community, and which interferes with his or her participation in rites, rituals, or other events may request that the grievance be resolved in the following manner.
I.If the member has a grievance such that he or she feels unable to honor the traditions of the Pagan community, (for example, if he or she is unable to stand in Circle in a spirit of "perfect love and perfect trust" because of the grievance) then that member shall not attend rituals until the grievance is resolved.
II.The member with the grievance shall first schedule a meeting with the person(s) with whom he or she has a grievance to attempt to find a resolution. The meeting shall take place on neutral ground. The participants may request the presence of any member of the CoE who is not currently the Teacher of any of the parties involved to act as a fair witness.
III.If the grievance cannot be resolved by the aforementioned method then the member with the grievance shall schedule a meeting with a PR or PRS to attempt to find a resolution. If the member is a Disciple, the member with whom he/she should meet shall be his or her Teacher.
IV.If a resolution cannot be reached by the aforementioned method, the member with the grievance should schedule a meeting with the Coven's AP, APS, HP, or HPS to attempt to resolve the grievance. Another member shall act as a fair witness to the proceedings.
V.If a resolution cannot be reached by any of the above steps, the grievance shall be brought before the Council of Elders, who will reach a final decision on the matter.
VI.No records shall be kept of any of these meeting(s) save to record that the meeting(s) took place, the Craft names of the persons attending, and any decisions which were made or actions which were taken.
Please note: This procedure is not designed to interfere with matters outside of Ancient Path; however, upon agreement of all parties involved, the Council of Elders may advise and assist in the resolution of mundane grievances.
Group Grievances
If a group of two or more members collectively have a grievance with a member or members such that they feel unable to honor the traditions of the Pagan community, the member(s) involved may then be requested to refrain from attendance at rituals until the grievance is resolved.
I.The Council of Elders shall meet with the member(s) in question in an attempt to resolve the grievance. In all such cases, the decision of the Council of Elders shall be final.
II.As in the case of individual grievances, no records shall be kept of any of these meeting(s) save to record that the meeting(s) took place, the Craft names of the persons attending, and any decisions which were made or actions which were taken.
Disciplinary Actions
Disciplinary actions may be imposed by Teachers on their Disciples, by the AP, APS, HP, or HPS on the members of their Coven, or by the Council of Elders on any member of the APC Tradition.
I.Member(s) may be asked not to attend any APC rituals until the grievance is resolved.
II.Disciplinary actions may include the removal of a member’s rank in APC.
III.Disciplinary actions imposed by a Teacher on a Disciple must be reported in full at the next meeting of the Coven's Council of Elders. These actions may not include expulsion from the Coven.
a.Any action imposed by a Teacher on a Disciple must be approved by the Council of Elders. If it is not approved, the action must be withdrawn.
b.The Council of Elders may choose to appoint a new Teacher for the Disciple should they consider it appropriate. The Council may also impose disciplinary action on the Teacher in question should they feel that the measures imposed on the Disciple were beyond the scope of the Teacher/Disciple relationship.
IV.Disciplinary actions taken at the HPR or HPRS level may include the expulsion of the member(s) involved. However an expulsion at this level shall only exclude the member(s) in question from attending rituals or functions held by that individual Coven, and shall not affect the member(s) right to attend any other APC ritual or function.
V.Disciplinary actions taken at the Council of Elders level may not exceed the expulsion of the member(s) involved. Expulsion shall exclude the member(s) from attending any APC ritual or activity but shall not presume to exclude them from non-APC Pagan rituals or activities.
a.Any member who has been expelled may not claim current membership in APC.
b.Any person who contacts any member of APC concerning any member(s) who have been expelled will be told only that the person in question is no longer a member of APC in good standing by order of the Council of Elders.
Article VII - Ordination
The Ancient Path Coven has an ordination program available for the ordination of eligible members. Members who have received ordination from the Coven are legally able to perform weddings, perform as a chaplain at prisons, hospitals, or other places that require chaplain’s services, preside over a funeral, pastoral counseling, or any other service requiring an ordination in the state of Kansas.
Ordinations for the members of the Coven shall be valid for three years at a time. However, for the ordained member to be considered “in good standing” certain criteria must be met. The criteria are as follows:

II.All ordained members are expected to fulfill their specific office related role within the Coven.

Ordination Renewal
If the ordained member has been in good standing for each year of the three years of their ordination as described above, the ordained member must simply make a formal request from the CoE to renew their ordination. If the CoE approves, the ordination will be renewed for another three year period.
If the ordained member has not been considered in good standing for any one of the years of his or her three year period then that member shall be required to take an ordination renewal course which will last for no less than 90 days. The subject matter shall contain:
